The pinky trick has never worked for me either, but I can't even draw a straight line when I am using a ruler. I just kind of fail.

Doesn't always work for me, but I do better if I am full arm's length from the board, paper, etc when I go for a straight line. The closer my body is to the point of contact, the harder it is to get a straight line of any length.
